Entering into eternal life with the Lord whom she loved, Barbara Ruffin Strayer departed this life on Monday, August 17, 2015, following a week of intensive care in Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. Barbara was born in Pennsylvania and moved with her parents and three siblings to Oxnard, California in 1945. Following high school graduation in 1955, she pursued a career in nursing and completed her training after marriage and the early school years of three sons, Michael, Tom, and Jim Ruffin. Barbara served as a dedicated nurse in an office for medical care of elderly patients and moved on to becoming an operating room supervisor in two hospitals. Barbara married Paul Strayer in 1980 and called to her heart his three children, Janine, Ronnie, and Lori. After retirement, Barbara and Paul moved to Cedar City in 1990 to build their dream home and become active members of the civic community and devoted participants in the parish life of Christ the King Parish. Barbara lost her husband Paul in 2013 and was also preceded in death by her loving parents, Jean and Nick Valenteen, brother Bill Valenteen, and step-son Ron Strayer. Barbara is survived by the children of their blended family - Mike Ruffin, Tom (Julie) Ruffin, Jim Ruffin, Janine (Ralph)Martinez, Lori (Gregg) Walker, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother Jim Valenteen and sister Marian Clare Valenteen RSM (Joanne). A memorial Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on August 29 at Christ the King Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Christ the King Church, 690 South Cove Drive, Cedar City, CA 84720 or Sisters of Mercy, 7262 Mercy Road, Omaha, NE 68124. Arrangements are being handled by Southern Utah Mortuary.
