Our wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, Doris Lucille Higgins Painter, age 99, passed away on September 17, 2014 in Beaver, Utah. She was born on July 2, 1915 in Fulton County, Illinois to Charles Meredith and Jesse Beers Higgins. As a child growing up on a farm, she learned how to do chores outside as well as help her mother clean the house on the inside. Doris raised chickens and sheep that she showed in 4-H. She went to a one room school house for the first eight years of her schooling, graduated from High School and attended Business College for 2 years. Doris owned her own book store and accounting business in Canton, Illinois. Her best memory was seeing her fiancé, who later became her husband, John Scott Painter after he was released as a POW in Japan during WWII for 45 months. With John being a career military officer, Doris and family moved often and lived in Illinois, Michigan, Texas, California, Georgia, Kansas, Hawaii and Italy. Each move was a new adventure for the whole family. Doris loved reading, gardening and giving service to others. She and John enjoyed travelling throughout Europe, the Middle East and South America as well as the United States. They also enjoyed squirrel and rabbit hunting when they lived in Illinois. Doris was active in doing Family History, Scouting, Daughters of the American Revolution, Mayflower Society, Eastern Star, Military Hospital Volunteer, and the Officer Wives Club. Doris was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1995, where she had been active as a Sunday School Teacher, Visiting Teacher, a Relief Society Teacher, and sang with the Choir. Doris is survived by her children: Suzanne (Roger) Buckley of Beaver, UT., and John Samuel (Janet) Painter of Henderson, NV. Along with 9 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She is proceeded in death by her husband, John Scott Painter, Col in the US Army. Her parents; Charles and Jessie Higgins, and her brothers; Howard V, Ernest N, and Paul M Higgins. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2014 at 3:00 pm in the Beaver 5th Ward Chapel. A viewing will be held prior to the service that day from 2:00-300 pm at the Church. Interment will be in the Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS on Friday, September 26th, at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are being handled by Southern Utah Mortuary.
