John Thomas Tonkin Obituary (1948 - 2022)

John Thomas Tonkin, age 74, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Monday, September 19, 2022 while on vacation in Utah. He was born on February 22, 1948 in Philadelphia, PA to Thomas and Marion Tonkin. He grew up in Philadelphia, graduated from Olney High School, and went on to serve in the US Airforce, before marrying his wife, Jan, on June 18, 1972. He then graduated from The King's College in Briarcliff Manor, NY, and worked for many years as a mental health professional and substance abuse counselor. He faithfully served at Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia in many capacities including as a home fellowship Bible study leader and in the Christian Alternatives to Addiction ministry. He was an avid reader, and a lover of all Philadelphia sports teams. He is survived by his wife, Jan, of 50 years, daughters, Jessica McKnight (Jamie), Robyn Gannon (Aaron), and Kelly Tonkin, sister Ruth Ellen Tonkin of Millbrook, NY, as well as 5 grandchildren, Jonathan, Jackson, Amelia, Samuel, and Judah. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Marion Tonkin, and sons Randall and Keith Tonkin. Memorial service will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 11 AM at Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia (13500 Philmont Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19116). The family will receive visitors prior to the service, from 10-11 AM.
