Cedar City, Utah

Mary Jane Cox Leany, beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on August 26th, 2009 in St. George, Utah. She was born on March 16, 1935 in Hurricane, Utah to Sarah LaVern Thurston and Isaiah Joseph Cox. She married Reed Jay Leany on February 26, 1955 in the St. George LDS temple. Mary Jane grew up in Hurricane on the family farm, and after marrying Reed, they moved to St. George where their five children were born. Later, they moved to Salt Lake City where Mary Jane worked as a keypunch operator for over 30 years at Beneficial Life and the Utah State Board of Education. Mary Jane and Reed retired and moved to Kanarraville, Utah, where they have lived for the last 12 years. Family was paramount in Mary Jane's life, and her greatest joys were found in family activities. She loved camping, playing games, and simple vacations. She enjoyed gardening, taking care of her fruit trees, crocheting, quilting, sewing, and preparing special and extraordinary meals for family, friends, and loved ones. She always placed others needs before her own, and lived to make them comfortable. She spent countless hours serving others in the church and community. This unselfish service was indicative of her Christlike concern towards others. She loved genealogy, family history and made innumerable trips with friends and relatives to serve in the temple. Mary Jane was preceded in death by her parents, brothers June and Thurston Cox, and sister Sarah. She is survived by husband Reed, children KayeLynne (Andy) Davis, Sharla, Dale (Merrianne), Norine (Glenn) Oborn, and Cynthia (George) Slade. She has 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brothers Mayhew and Myron (Colleen) Cox, and sisters Alta Carroll and Erva (Theron) Huff. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 29th, 2009 at 11 am in the Kanarraville LDS Chapel. Friends may visit Friday evening 6-8 pm at Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 N, 300W Cedar City and Saturday morning at the church from 9:30 -10:30 am. Interment will be in the Hurricane City Cemetery at 1 pm. The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and staff at Dixie Regional Medical Center and to her sweet and caring Kanarraville friends.
