Cedar City, Utah

Oscar Kent Hulet was born October 28, 1926 in summit, Utah to Oscar Jones and Violet Walker Hulet. He was the second child of four children. He married Laurel Lunt on June 4, 1957 in the St. George Temple. He passed away on March 23, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dorothy Mickelson, and his daughter Myree Mitchell. He is survived by his wife, Laurel, his four sons, Oscar (Melanie), John (Tammy), Roger (Stephanie), Tom (Carole), his sister Marjorie Evans, his brother Carlisle Hulet, 21 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Kent was drafted to serve in WWII before he graduated from high school. He was stationed in the Philippines preparing to invade Japan when the atomic bombs were dropped, and the war ended. So, instead of invading Japan, he was involved in the military clean-up effort. He always said the atomic bomb saved his life . Kent became the army Baker . One day just after cooking an apple pie, the stove blew up and burned him severely. He spent four months recovering in an army hospital in Japan. After his military service, Kent served an LDS mission back to Japan. He often said that it was hard to learn to love the people he was initially taught to hate . During his mission Kent developed a great love for the Japanese that continued throughout his life. After graduation from BYU, Kent spent his life as an educator in the Provo, Richfield, and Cedar City school districts. He worked as a Teacher, Principal and Director of Elementary Education. It was while teaching 6th grade at the East Elementary that he met and married the 1st grade teacher with the rosy cheeks and ridiculous shoes . Retirement didnt stop Kent from continuing his passion for learning and work. He enjoyed studying the scriptures, reading, gardening, furniture refinishing, weaving, family history and genealogy work. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the St. George LDS Temple as a sealer and often commented how great it was working with dead and near dead . The Mountain Cabin with family was Kents favorite place to be. He loved to cook for family gatherings and could often be found standing by the BBQ smoker with tongs in hand. Nothing has been more important to Kent than his family. He dearly loved each of them and they knew it. Family time spent at the cabin will no doubt be some of the most cherished memories for all. A day in the country is worth a month in town . We would like to thank all of our friends, family, neighbors and health care professionals who have been so kind in serving Kent. You have shown true Christ-like love as you have helped us through this most difficult time. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the LDS Cedar City West Stake Center (725 South 1100 West).
