Raye Ellen Atkin, 84, died October 31th, 2023 at Legacy of South Jordan. She was born September 7th, 1939, in Ruth Nevada, the only child of Leal Rex Smith and Barbara Morris.
She married Gary Alton Atkin on February 22nd, 1956 in Ruth, Nevada. They were later sealed in the Manti Temple on May 26th, 2006. They celebrated 63 years of marriage before the passing of Gary on July 2nd, 2019.
She is survived by children; Daniel Atkin, Rick (Tanya) Atkin, Lisa (Tony) Slok and seven grandchildren. Cousin; Gloria Murdock. Special friends; Hal Murdock, and Leah Glenn. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, her beloved dog Coco, and many other family members, all of whom we’re sure she's having a sweet reunion with.
Raye and Gary lived in Nevada and Sandy, Utah. She worked for Jordan School District, Montgomery Ward and Alta View Hospital’s housekeeping department. She took pride in making sure patients' rooms were clean and sterile. She always worked holidays so her coworkers who had young children could be home with their families. After she and Gary retired they moved to Gary's hometown, Beaver, Utah. She served in the Beaver 2nd ward for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a Compassionate Service Leader and Ministering sister. She had a huge amount of “fine china” which was cool whip, frosting, and margarine containers. You could never find a lid for any of them. She enjoyed snacking on mints, that she insisted on being frozen while working on word search puzzles or crocheting pot holders and hangers to be given as gifts to family and friends. She loved to cook and bake, and every day at the dinner table, she made sure to give her fluffy 4 four legged friend some scraps. Coco will no doubt be back at her side. While residing at the Cottage at Legacy she enjoyed singing, dancing and helping the other residents and staff.
A graveside service will be held on November 4th, 2023 at 11:00 am at Mountain View Cemetery (600 North 650 East, Beaver, UT) with a viewing prior from 10:00 - 10:45 am at Southern Utah Mortuary Beaver (195 North 200 West). Online condolences may be sent at www.mortuary.org.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to everyone who cared for Raye including Hal & Gloria Murdock, Leah Glenn and her neighbors. Dr. Rhett Smith, Tami Smith and staff at Beaver Clinic. Also the staff at Legacy of South Jordan and Inspiration Hospice.
