Cedar City, Utah

Russell Daniel Anderson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend passed away peacefully at his home on April 23, 2010. Russ was born in Cottonwood, Utah on December 27, 1927 to Daniel and Myrtle G. Frates Anderson. Russ was the second of three children. His first sibling and only sister passed away shortly after birth. He grew up in the home he was born in surrounded by aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends. He made close friendships in his youth that have carried through to this day. He loved working with his uncles and father on the family farm and store. He learned to do just about everything under their guidance including meat cutting; he used that skill throughout his many successful deer hunting outings and tried to teach his children the same. Russ graduated from Granite High School in 1945 and served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Norway with his Cottonwood, boyhood, friend, Frank Bagley. He attended the University of Utah earning a bachelors and masters degree. In 1961, he was awarded a PhD from the same institution in Invertebrate Zoology. Russ married Barbara Jo Ann Wareing in the Salt Lake Temple on September 12, 1958. They immediately left for a honeymoon and a new job in Laie, Hawaii. There he accepted a job teaching at Church College of Hawaii, now, BYU Hawaii. In 1964, he returned to the mainland and accepted a teaching position at College of Southern Utah (Southern Utah University, SUU) in Cedar City where he taught until retirement. During his tenure at SUU, Russ published many entomological scientific papers, served as Dean of the Science Department, Department Chair, and advisor to pre-medicine students. Russ and Barbara have three children, twelve grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and three grandchildren in law whom he loved very much. His most cherished blessings were his family and showed this by the love and attention he paid to each and all. He spent many hours and put many miles on his cars traveling around to children and grandchildrens sporting events, horse shows, plays, choir and band concerts. Russ and Bobbie never missed an event if they could help it and loved every minute of it. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping, boating and spending time in the mountains, especially when doing these things with his children and grand children. He loved to take the grandkids fishing anytime he could. Russ and Bobby were world travelers; while authoring some of his scientific papers and traveling for pleasure, they visited six of the worlds seven continents and all of the United States and its territories. Three of his favorite destinations were the Galapagos Islands, the Panama Canal Zone, and the Amazon region of South America. On some of these adventures, all three of his children went along, something that was very unusual at the time. Russ was a member of the Cedar City Rotary Club; for thirteen years, he acted as a volunteer for the Five County Association of Governments Health Department and State Health Department Steering Committee; in 2009, he was recognized for exemplary volunteer work in public health by the National Allied Local Boards of Health (NALBO) in Philadelphia, PA. Russ was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he worked with boy scouts for many years. He loved taking them on church boating and camping excursions. He enjoyed his Norwegian mission service and was appreciative that each of his grandsons that are old enough has served or is now serving honorable missions. Russ was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Marian. He is survived by his wife Barbara, one daughter; Vickie Lynne Anderson Weaver (EdWynn), two sons; Chad Wareing Anderson (Trisha), and Eric Daniel Anderson (Mary Jo), all of Cedar City; and his brother, Morris E. Anderson (Marlene) of Salt Lake City and beloved nephews and niece.
