Tandy Dillard Obituary (1939

Tandy William "Bucky" Dillard passed away November 17, 2014 at his home in Summit, UT, after a 21 year fight against prostate cancer. He was born August 3, 1939, in Yerington, Nevada to Clemency H. and Alvina Augusta Hellwinkel Dillard. In 1942 his family moved to California where his father worked in the shipyard to help the war effort. In 1944 they moved to Gardnerville, NV, then to Yerington again and eventually to Hawthorne where he grew up and attended school. He was active in basketball and baseball in high school. He graduated from Mineral County High School in 1957. While in high school and after graduation he worked for his father in the dairy supply business. In 1959 he joined the United States Coast Guard, serving in Alameda, CA, on the Coast Guard cutter Ponchartrain, on Unimak Island in the Aleutians in Alaska, and on a patrol boat in Long Beach, CA. He was discharged in 1963 and the family moved back to Hawthorne where he began his civil service career working at the Naval Ammunition Depot Hawthorne. The base in Hawthorne was turned over to civilian contractors in 1980 and in order to continue working for the government he accepted a position at the Naval Construction Battalion Center Port Hueneme and we moved to Oxnard, CA. A new adventure was in order in 1985 so a transfer took the family to Adak, AK for three years and then back to California until his retirement and settling in Summit, UT in 1994. On November 4, 1960, before leaving for the Aleutian Islands, "Bucky" and Jeanette Lowe were united in marriage at the LDS chapel in Hawthorne, NV. Six children were born to this union. Bucky enjoyed basketball, softball, hunting, fishing, water skiing, bowling and camping in his younger years. He watched a lot of his kids' baseball, basketball and volleyball games and did a little coaching too. Later on he built the home in Summit, became an avid reader of western novels, enjoyed woodworking, and watching old westerns. After procrastinating for many years he finally made the decision to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on July 12, 2014. Bucky was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and infant son Christopher (twin brother of Scott). He is survived by his wife Jeanette; daughters Rhonda (Jim) Riley of Cedar City, UT and Cheryl Dillard of Reno, NV; sons Michael (Julie) of Summit, UT, Scott of Enoch, UT and Brian of Hawthorne, NV; grandchildren Aaron Dillard, Stefani Owens, Matthew Corwin, Andrew Corwin, Samantha Corwin, Jessica Dillard, Dakota Dillard and Zachary Dillard; great-grandson Ike Corwin with another great grandson to be born in March; step grandson Nathan Riley and his children Conrad and Henri; sisters LaVerne Padgett and Nancy Kelly, both of Phoenix, AZ, and brothers Dan (Sandy) Dillard of Fallon, NV and Eugene (Carol) Dillard of Hawthorne, NV. Funeral services will be held in the Summit Ward Chapel on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 prior to the service. Burial will be in the Summit Cemetery. The family would like to thank Bonnie, Jill and Craig with Intermountain Home Care and to all those at the Huntsman-Intermountain Cancer Center in Cedar City.
